First impressions of a junior BI Consultant at Agiliz

My name is Arne Polfliet and in this blog post, I will give my first impressions of starting as a Junior Business Intelligence consultant at Agiliz. This will include the work, co-workers, events and everything surrounding my starting days.

Agiliz is a company I’ve been affiliated with since my internship. The interview with Steve, my boss, immediately left a great first impression. This ultimately led to the decision to start my nine weeks of working on a real project in a real work environment.

The following months started off with me enjoying the project I was working on. It wasn’t an easy project, but it had most tasks of a BI-project in. I felt is was the perfect opportunity to test what I would be able to do in the Business Intelligence sector. This turned out to be a great decision in this end. Both improving my skills and finding out if I actually enjoy the work.
After the internship, there was a two-month period where I had a vacation. I officially started the first of August, but they already invited me to come along on a team-event to the Ardennes. Here we got to drive trucks off-road, go on a scavenger hunt in the forest and sit around a modern campfire. A great start to the new “work-life”.

When it comes to the social aspect, this being a consultancy company, I didn’t know who any of my colleagues were. After a couple of weeks, however, I finally got to meet the people stationed at BAC (Brussels Airport Company). This turned out quite positive and eventually led to the decision to sign the contract to become a full-time employee at Agiliz.

Starting from August I would be a Business Intelligence Consultant.
My first project would be at one of our two biggest customers. The second of August I started working at Brussels Airport Company. At first, this was a bit unsettling because it was a whole new chapter in my life. Most of my nerves were put aside when I was introduced to everyone, most of the people I already met during my internship.

The following months would be very heavy on the learning aspect. But everyone was very helpful and I immediately felt at ease. I almost instantly felt as part of the group. In fact, the whole of Agiliz felt as a very tight-knit group of people.

The platform we work with on almost all of the projects is MicroStrategy. I already knew some of the basics because I worked with it during my internship. I had, and still have, a lot to learn regarding BI and the platform but thanks to my colleagues being very helpful I am learning at a decent speed.

When it comes to speaking your mind, Agiliz and everyone surrounding it is very open for the most part. If anything is on your mind you don’t have to be afraid to speak your mind. This is a very important aspect in any company to feel that you are appreciated, and this is certainly the case here. You feel like you are part of a team and not just another employee.

There certainly are aspects we can work on together. But there will always be points you can improve on. In general, I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out and I am very excited to see what the future has in store for Agiliz and me.
